A Nigerian woman has told a terrifying account of how she was almost kidnapped by an Uber driver in Lagos.
The encounter, which she described in a TikTok video, elicited passionate emotions online.
According to her, the incident occurred early in the morning as she was on her way to work for an important presentation. Because of the crowds at the park, she opted to take an Uber.
“I was heading to work that day, and I had a presentation. I left home at 4 a.m. and arrived at the bus station by 5 a.m. “Everyone was struggling, so I ordered Uber,” she explained.
She claimed that the ride arrived nearly immediately, and she jumped in without any consideration.
She had no idea that the driver had already cancelled the excursion as soon as she got in the car.
“I immediately ordered, and it was right in front of me. I rested my body and placed my phone in my bag. I didn’t realize the Uber driver had cancelled the trip.”
She stated she tried to sleep momentarily throughout the travel but became uneasy. That’s when she realized something wasn’t right.
“There was disquiet in my spirit. I opened my eyes and noticed that the door handle on my side was broken. There was no way to open it from the inside. I was also unable to wind down the glass. “Only the driver had control.”
As she got more alert, the driver suddenly pulled out a revolver.
“He took a rifle from a secret compartment and placed it in plain sight before returning it. That’s when I realized I was in serious trouble.
Terrified, she questioned what he wanted from her.
“I asked him if he wanted to kill or kidnap me.”
Fortunately, while stalled in traffic, another motorist who had previously smiled at her observed her suffering. She remembered not smiling back and instead attempting to alert him that she was in danger.
“My face was already crimson. I was crying silently. I leaned near the driver’s side so he could see me clearly.
As the traffic remained steady, the man approached the Uber car and banged on the window, requesting that the driver slow down. When he did not react, three other men joined him.
“One of them used a stone to crack the windshield. They opened the door. I instantly pointed out where the rifle was.”
According to her, they uncovered the weapon and severely beat the driver for the attempted abduction.
“They found the gun and beat him up that day,” she told me.
The video has since gone viral, causing indignation and concern for rider safety. Many customers have advocated for stronger security checks and stricter regulation of Nigeria’s e-hailing firms.
