On Thursday, the White House announced that President Donald Trump will decide within the next two weeks whether the United States will become directly involved in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
Speaking to reporters, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt relayed a statement from the president: “Based on the fact that there’s a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks.”
The remark represents a cautious attitude as Middle Eastern tensions continue to increase, with Israel and Iran swapping strikes in recent days.
The president’s remarks are the strongest hint yet that Washington is considering taking a more direct role in the conflict. However, Trump has frequently stated that he prefers negotiation over conflict.
