Moscow has requested an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the situation in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The meeting, scheduled for Monday, will address the consequences of the recent developments, particularly focusing on the U.N.’s mandate regarding the ceasefire in the Golan Heights.

This request follows Israeli forces seizing a buffer zone in the area, which is claimed by both Israel and Syria.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu declared the 1974 disengagement agreement had collapsed, as Syrian troops abandoned their positions.

Israeli forces, along with the U.S., have carried out airstrikes in Syria, targeting ISIS and strategic weapons systems to prevent them from falling into the hands of extremists.

The U.S. also emphasized its concern for the security of civilians and opposition groups in Syria, coordinating with Turkey to avoid escalation.

Washington is closely monitoring the situation and engaging with regional leaders to support a transition away from Assad’s regime.
