Detective Allan Reddins of the Oak Park Police Department was killed in the line of duty while responding to a report of an armed suspect leaving a bank in Oak Park, Illinois, near Chicago.
Reddins was shot in the left side and later died from his injuries.
The suspect was also injured in the leg and taken into custody.
Reddins, 40, had been with the Oak Park Police since May 2019, and his death is the department’s first line-of-duty fatality since 1938.
The Oak Park Police Department expressed condolences to Reddins’ family, friends, and colleagues.
