David Lynch, the creator of Twin Peaks and director of Mulholland Drive, is speaking out against smoking after revealing that he now relies on supplemental oxygen for even simple physical activities due to emphysema, a lung disease he developed from years of smoking.
In a recent People interview, Lynch urged others to quit smoking, acknowledging the severe health risks.
He explained that while he doesn’t regret smoking, as it was an important part of his creative process, he wishes it had been healthier.
Lynch started smoking at just 8 years old and only quit two years ago when he realized the damage it was causing to his health.
His comments come as smoking rates continue to decline among young people, with fewer teens using tobacco products, though nicotine pouches like Zyn are on the rise.
Lynch shared that quitting was challenging, and he vividly remembered the pleasure he found in smoking, even describing the feeling of lighting a cigarette as “a one-way trip to heaven.”
Despite the difficulties, he emphasized the importance of quitting for health reasons, encouraging others to avoid the same fate.
