Frank Grillo joined the DC Universe to play Rick Flag Sr., a role that allows him to explore the character in both animated and live-action formats.
His first project, Creature Commandos, is a cartoon sequel to The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, which premieres Thursday on Max.
Grillo praised the creative freedom he was given by James Gunn, who wrote the series, and enjoyed the challenge of voicing Flag in animation while also preparing to reprise the role in Peacemaker Season 2 and the Superman movie.
He found Flag to be a complex, relatable character, with many of his choices mirroring Grillo’s own personality.
The character is also dealing with the grief of losing his son, Rick Flag Jr., in The Suicide Squad.
Grillo appreciates Creature Commandos for balancing humor, heart, action, and drama, making it an emotional and engaging project.
The series features a diverse cast, including Sean Gunn, Zoë Chao, and Viola Davis, who reprises her role as Amanda Waller.
