Wildlife officials are hunting coyotes in southeast central Colorado after one attacked a 4-year-old girl on Thanksgiving Day in northern Colorado Springs.

The girl and another child approached a coyote, mistaking it for a dog, and the coyote lunged at her, grabbing her head and causing serious injuries.

The girl was hospitalized overnight.

The child’s father quickly intervened to stop the attack.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is now searching for the coyote and plans to kill all coyotes in the area, as identifying the exact animal is impossible.

The carcasses will be tested for diseases and human DNA.

CPW urges the public to stay alert and discourage wildlife from approaching their homes.
