Thousands of supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan clashed with security forces in Islamabad on Tuesday, breaching barricades set up by the government.
The protests, demanding Khan’s release from prison, resulted in the deaths of four security personnel.
The demonstrators, led by Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s chief minister, Ali Amin Gandapur, advanced toward the Red Zone, where key government institutions are located.
Security forces responded with live rounds and tear gas, leading to the arrest of over 4,000 protesters.
Some injuries were reported, but the exact number is unclear.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the protests as extremism.
