Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a centrist Democrat from New Jersey, announced his bid to succeed Phil Murphy as governor of New Jersey, emphasizing his plans to lower taxes and reduce living costs.
Speaking at the Runway Diner in South Hackensack, Gottheimer pledged to make the state more affordable by cutting taxes and addressing rising costs for healthcare, utilities, rent, and groceries.
A five-term congressman known for his moderate stance, Gottheimer has worked with Republicans in the Problem Solvers Caucus and often clashed with progressives in his own party.
Gottheimer, 49, is seeking to replace Murphy, who is term-limited.
He may face a challenge from Rep. Mikie Sherrill, who is expected to announce her candidacy.
Gottheimer also criticized New York City’s congestion pricing plan, which would impose tolls on motorists entering Manhattan, arguing it adds unnecessary costs for New Jersey drivers.
He vowed to fight the tolls, working with both Democrats and Republicans to oppose the plan.
