Haiti’s ruling transitional council has fired Prime Minister Garry Conille, just six months after his appointment. Conille was replaced by Alix Didier Fils-Aime, the former president of Haiti’s Chamber of Commerce.

However, Conille questioned the legality of his dismissal, arguing that while the council can appoint a prime minister, only Parliament has the authority to remove one.

Despite the dismissal, Conille pledged to continue working for peace and stability in Haiti.

Haiti has been grappling with severe gang violence and political instability since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.

Conille, appointed in June 2023, was tasked with leading the country toward presidential elections next year.

A recent U.N. report highlighted the alarming rise in gang-related deaths, with over 2,600 killed since January.

In response to the situation, the U.S. Embassy issued a travel advisory, warning U.S. citizens about potential protests and unrest in Haiti.
