Over half of the 43 rhesus macaque monkeys that escaped from the Alpha Genesis research facility in Yemassee, S.C., have been recaptured, local police reported.
The escape occurred after a caretaker failed to properly secure the enclosure, allowing the monkeys to leave while seven stayed behind.
The remaining monkeys are still near the facility, with some jumping over the fence.
Rescue efforts, including baited traps and thermal imaging, are ongoing.
The monkeys are interacting with those still inside the facility, which is a positive sign.
Authorities have urged residents to keep doors and windows shut and avoid the area, as the animals can be easily startled.
