Mackenzie “Kenzie” Michalski, a 31-year-old woman from New York, was killed in Budapest last week after meeting a man on vacation.
She was last seen on Nov. 4 around 10 p.m. at a restaurant in Budapest’s Jewish Quarter, later sending photos from a nightclub before disappearing. She never returned to her Airbnb.
Investigators found that Michalski had been with a suspicious man at multiple nightclubs.
The man, a 37-year-old from Ireland, was arrested on Nov. 7. Police said the two had gotten intimate at his apartment, after which he killed her.
He then attempted to cover up the crime, cleaning the apartment and hiding her body in a wardrobe before placing it in a suitcase and driving to Lake Balaton, where he dumped her body in a wooded area.
The suspect reportedly searched online for information about body disposal before confessing to the killing, claiming it was accidental.
He led police to the body, and video footage of the confession was released.
Michalski’s family expressed their gratitude for the support they received during the search for her.
