Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora, the founder of elPeriódico newspaper and a vocal critic of government corruption, has been granted house arrest after over two years in prison.
Zamora’s detention, which began in July 2022, was based on accusations of money laundering, though press freedom advocates claim his arrest was politically motivated due to his investigative work.
His family and supporters have long campaigned for his release, and international organizations, including the United Nations, raised concerns about the conditions of his imprisonment, describing them as inhumane.
However, legal battles surrounding his case are ongoing.
